Hotel Icefiord in Ilulissat The name comes with obligations, when the hotel is called Hotel Icefiord, but from the moment you stand in your room, you get full value for money with one of the world’s greatest ice fjords just outside the window. It is ten years since Hotel Icefiord was built in Ilulissat. Only 800 metres away, 70 tons of ice daily flow from Ilulissat ice fjord and out into Disko Bay. It is an enthralling natural phenomenon on a par with the world’s biggest waterfall, but with water of a somewhat harder consistency. This is why the area was put on the list of UNESCO’s world heritage sites in 2004, as an area worth preserving. When you have rested a while and enjoyed one of the hotel’s beers from their own micro brewery, you can’t avoid being impressed by the local fishermen’s efforts to make a living. In the hotel’s own restaurant you can continue to enjoy the view if you are keen on tasting warm-smoked salmon, smoked whale or wild game ragout, for example. Smoked food is the only form of smoke that you will find here, because Hotel Icefiord has been totally smoke-free since 2008. The hotel is open around the year except for the 14 days around Christmas and New Year, because the peak season has gradually expanded over the past ten years.
